From experience gained in assisting families to resettle, the advice we offer in this section is in a spirit of care and consideration without any intention of interfering in peoples lives.

working at homeHouse costs escalated everywhere in the early years of the 21st century, and have all fallen back in more recent times--including in rural areas. And though they have fallen quite a bit in urban areas, they are still lower in most rural areas than cities. Having said that, there is still a housing crisis in that even houses at the lower end of the market are still too expensive for the ordinary person.

Most families moving with R.R.I. are unemployed when they resettle; consequently they are not in a position to purchase straight away. The exceptions are people who, having sold a house in a city, have enough left over to purchase a house in the country.

Also, many families who have resettled over the past ten years are now house owners through Shared Ownership Mortgages and other mortgages.

You will not be better off financially in the country unless you take advantage of the opportunities to grow vegetables, cut turf, etc. It takes time, hard work and know how to provide food for the table from your garden. However it can be done and there is real satisfaction in eating fresh wholesome food grown by yourself. All libraries have books on gardening and your new rural neighbours will also be happy to offer advice.

Be extra careful about budgeting your income--there is a tendency to spend more than you can afford in the excitement of the move. Moving house may also have a number of hidden expenses such as travel costs, etc.

Mortgages
Experience has shown that many families who originally moved to private rented accommodation managed to either buy or build a house in the same area. This was made possible in some cases through Shared Ownership mortgages with the local county council.

Others who found work got bank mortgages. A few bought old cottages for cash (perhaps from savings or the sale of their house in the city) and renovated the cottages themselves.

People interested in becoming home owners after they move should look at all the possibilities. They should also talk to the local council about affordable housing options.
